MIDWAY THROUGH THE Flames’ first season after leaving Atlanta for Calgary, The Hockey News went behind the scenes of the operation. The 12-page deep dive into all things Flames explored the on-ice operation and highlighted why Calgary was the right place at the right time for the NHL. Included was an artist’s rendering of a new building for the team – the arena that became the iconic Saddledome. It was ready by Year 4, in 1983-84. There’s also an interview with Flames owner Nelson Skalbania. Skalbania, a real-estate developer, was something of an eccentric who had an insatiable desire for owning sports franchises.
