WHEN MARIO LEMIEUX first appeared on the cover of The Hockey News, there wasn’t quite the consensus about his abilities as one might expect there to be. To wit, while one scout asserted it ‘wouldn’t really surprise’ him if Lemieux managed to score 100 points in his rookie season – which so happened to be exactly how many he amassed in his Calder Trophy-winning campaign – another posited ‘Le Magnifique’ would either boom or bust. ‘He’ll either be a superstar or do nothing in the NHL,’ the scout said. Surely, the latter bird dog counts his lucky stars that he wasn’t named in the cover story. Some might find it odd that 18-year-old Lemieux isn’t wearing Pittsburgh threads in this photo.
