THE MODERN CUP celebration might have more pomp – it sure has more pyrotechnics – but it’s hard to beat the collective emotion on display in this photo of the Canadiens after capturing the Stanley Cup following a four-year drought. Flanked by captain Jean Beliveau and alternate Jean-Guy Talbot, Canadiens coach Toe Blake has a look of unbridled joy that is purely magnetic. He would also lead Montreal to two more Cups in the next three seasons. As for this specific victory, the retelling of the Cup presentation should provide current NHL commissioner Gary Bettman some solace. League president Clarence Campbell’s “remarks were lost in the thunderous booing that inevitably greets his attempts to speak at these ceremonies.” We’ll spare a word, too, for the Calder Cup story on the cover,…
