CHANGE WASN’T JUST coming to the NHL – it had arrived. Seven years after expansion, the league crowned its first non-Original Six Stanley Cup champion, the Flyers, and The Hockey News’ dispatch from Philadelphia called it a distinctly Broad Street Bullies-style victory. The historic Cup final, it was written, wouldn’t be remembered for awe-inspiring play but instead “the disgraceful hockey that flourished throughout the series.” The series did, after all, see four misconducts, 22 fighting majors, 29 roughing minors, and penalties for kneeing, butt-ending and spearing. The runner-up Boston Bruins weren’t willing to concede much after the loss, either, aside from plaudits for Flyers goalie Bernie Parent. “Have I ever seen better goaltending? Once.
