CHALK IT UP TO the innocence of youth. Just a year or two into my employment with The Hockey News, I was still an editor/writer when I came up with a cover story concept: Joe Sakic and Mike Modano, head to head. I don’t know why I thought of it in the first place, but the two superstars had been on fascinatingly similar career paths up to that point, and I wondered what it would be like if we got them to sit down together. The parallels were numerous: both were first-round picks out of the WHL (Sakic with Swift Current, Modano with Prince Albert). Both played for franchises that had moved during their careers (Sakic’s Quebec Nordiques became the Colorado Avalanche, Modano’s Minnesota North Stars became the Dallas Stars)…
