The Sun has an 11-year visual activity cycle. During 2020, activity levels dropped to that associated with solar minimum, when things get really quiet. Activity should start to show signs of recovery in 2021 and this is a good time to dust off your solar observing kit, getting ready for the slow crawl to solar maximum, expected sometime between 2023 and 2026. Before starting, it’s necessary to cover some essential safety guidelines. The Sun is dangerous and can do you and your equipment harm. It’s essential to be safety conscious about it at all times and to double-check everything you do. You should never look directly at the Sun without adequate eye protection.
