Aquila, the Eagle represents the legendary creature which was used to torture Prometheus, the Titan, who stole fire from the Gods and gave it to man. Prometheus was chained to a rock for his deed and attacked by the bird-of-prey. The Eagle was an emblem of Zeus, the King of the Gods. Encountering the chained Titan, it ripped out Prometheus’s liver. But the Titan was immortal and his liver grew back overnight only for him to endure the agony on every following day. Prometheus was eventually freed by Hercules, who killed the Eagle using the arrow Sagitta. Aquila appears like a misshapen ‘X’. The brightest star in the constellation is Altair (Alpha (α) Aquilae), easily identified because it marks the southern tip of the asterism known as the Southern Triangle.…
