Project 2: Spot lunar volcanoes

Inactive volcanic domes are all over the Moon, but hunting them down takes skill

The Moon is a fantastic target for everyone, regardless of astronomical experience. There is so much to see through a telescope that you could dedicate a lifetime to observing it all. However, it soon becomes clear that the best time to observe features that have height or depth is when the Sun is low in the lunar sky from their position. When this happens, exaggerated shadows really help these features stand out. Some features are so large that they are visible to the naked eye. The most obvious examples are the lunar maria, the dark, lava-filled basins that create a distinctive pattern over the Moon’s familiar face.
