Moonless conditions make for some promising meteor-spotting this month

1 APRIL Mars 1° south of Saturn (morning) 3 APRIL Venus passes in front of the Pleiades (evening) 13 APRIL Rising Moon occulting the Lagoon Nebula (morning) 22 APRIL Favourable peak of the Lyrid meteor shower 26 APRIL Venus close to an evening crescent Moon April at a glance The April sky presents a number of generally large and ill-defined patterns towards the south. One exception is Leo the Lion, distinctive thanks to the backward question mark pattern known as the Sickle. The bright star at its base is Regulus (Alpha (α) Leonis). One way to locate Regulus is to use the familiar Plough or Saucepan asterism that is virtually overhead near midnight.
