Explore the Moon’s mountains and observe how appearance changes with lunar phase

Rising above the lunar surface to great heights, mountains are visible all over the Moon. Crater mountain complexes Lunar mountains are found in three general locations. Violent impacts which formed lunar craters often resulted in the formation of central mountain complexes. These are easy to locate, sitting centrally within their host crater. Young, crisp craters such as Tycho, Copernicus and Theophilus have well-defined central mountain complexes but some large craters – Plato, Archimedes and Ptolemaeus – show no peaks. Some complexes appear sharp, some rounded. Some have singular peaks, some have many. Most appear central but there are examples where this is not the case.
