Project 2: A galaxy class observation

Galaxies appear in all shapes and sizes. How many different types can you record?

A galaxy is an immense gravitationally bound collection of stars, interstellar gas, dust and dark matter. Typically, they range in size from 3,000 to 300,000 lightyears and are separated by millions of lightyears. A galaxy contains millions to billions of stars and to date it is estimated there are 200 billion galaxies in the observable Universe. They come in all shapes and sizes. The Hubble sequence, introduced by Edwin Hubble in 1926, provides order to the variations. In 1959, Gérard de Vaucouleurs made a refinement to Hubble’s base sequence giving rise to the Hubble-De Vaucouleurs galaxy classification scheme.
