December at a glance

There’s a distinct contrast between the subtle stars of autumn and the bold constellations of winter. The transition zone is marked by Aries and Taurus, Aries appearing bland in comparison with feature-rich Taurus. Further south, the distinction is less obvious. Southwest of Taurus lies the large sprawling form of Cetus, the Whale or Sea Monster. Southeast of Taurus lies the unmistakable pattern of Orion, the Hunter, with the region between Orion and Cetus occupied by mostly faint and meandering Eridanus, the River. Taurus, the Bull sits north of Eridanus and is unmistakeable for several reasons this month. Two beautiful and contrasting open clusters known as the Pleiades and Hyades normally steal the show.
