October at a glance

During long, dark October nights, the Milky Way arches overhead in the early evening. The view south and up to the zenith is something of a family mural. Overhead is W-shape of Cassiopeia, the Seated Queen. Imagining the W correctly orientated, above and slightly right of it you’ll find her husband, Cepheus, the King. Cepheus resembles the outline of a house – a square base with a triangle roof. The roof apex is marked by Er Rai (Gamma (ܓ) Cephei), itself a little less than 12° from Polaris (Alpha (ɑ) Ursae Minoris). A beautiful orange star lies under the floor of the house, Erakis (Mu (μ) Cephei) or Herschel’s Garnet Star. A line from Cepheus, through Cassiopeia, and on for the same distance brings you to Perseus, the Hero. In…
