September’s nights grow in duration at the fastest rate for the year thanks to the Northern Hemisphere’s Autumn Equinox. This year’s equinox occurs at 02:03 BST (01:03 UT) on 23 September, marking the instant when the centre of the Sun’s disc crosses the celestial equator, heading south. At the equinox, day and night are approximately equal in length and the Sun appears to rise due east, and sets due west. The nearest full Moon to this equinox is known as the Harvest Moon, a name which has meaning. At this time of year, the fuller phases of the Moon exhibit minimum difference between rise times one evening to the next.
