July at a glance

As far as astronomy under UK skies is concerned, the year is split into two halves; the part leading up to the June solstice on 21 June, and the part which follows it. In the period surrounding the solstice, there was no true darkness, but during July the nights are increasing in length – albeit slowly. The brilliant stars of summer, brought into view during June then removed due to the solstice period, find a new lease of life this month. As the skies slowly get darker, so the summer constellations appear bolder and there are some terrific sights to see. A highlight of the summer sky is the Milky Way.
