June at a glance

June is the month when the Sun reaches its most northerly position in the sky. Known as the June Solstice, for 2022, this instant in time occurs at 10:13 BST (09:13 UT) on 21 June. Around this date, the length of night is minimised and nowhere in the UK experiences true darkness. After sunset and prior to sunrise, the entire night is given over to a form of twilight. After the Sun has dipped more than 6o below the horizon, the sky is dark enough to reveal the presence of noctilucent clouds (NLCs), which may be present.
