SUMMER: Scutum
Scutum, the Shield is a small constellation visible during the Northern Hemisphere’s summer months. It lies north of Sagittarius, the Archer and is bordered by Aquila, the Eagle and Serpens Cauda, the Serpent’s Head to the west, north and east. When viewed from a dark sky site, a naked eye view of Scutum can sometimes be a little unnerving. As the Milky Way passes through it, you can be fooled into thinking clouds are moving in. The brightness is due to a region known as the Scutum Star Cloud, a strawberry shaped region of the Milky Way with an elevated brightness, located in the northern part of constellation.
