Where to spot the planets this month May at a glance The annual Eta (η) Aquariid meteor shower reaches a peak on the morning of 6 May. Though better suited to the Southern Hemisphere, the Moon is out of the way this year. In the run up to the peak, don’t miss Jupiter and Venus appearing really close. On the morning of 1 May, they appear separated by just 22 arcminutes. Look low towards the southern horizon approaching midnight to find the red supergiant Antares (Alpha (a) Scorpii). Its name means ‘rival of Mars’, an apt description based on the star’s distinct orange colour. Antares lies at the heart of Scorpius, the Scorpion.
