April at a glance

At the start of April, the period of true darkness from the centre of the UK is about seven hours long. At the end, it’s just four hours. Bookending the darkness are the periods of morning and evening twilight. In the morning twilight towards the end of April, be sure to check out Jupiter and Venus really close together, and a spectacular appearance of Mercury in the evening. The most dominant star of spring is Arcturus (Alpha (a) Boötis), a bright orange supergiant at the southern end of a tall, kite-shaped asterism in the heart of Boötes, the Herdsman.
