March at a glance

Rapidly expanding evening twilight rushes up to engulf Orion this month and the mighty Hunter’s time is becoming limited, especially by the end of March. Spring constellations are in charge now, the lead being taken by Leo, the Lion. This strong pattern is quite recognisable with a bit of artistic license. The Lion faces west towards Cancer and Gemini. Its head is formed by a distinctive backward question mark asterism known as the Sickle. The bright star Regulus (Alpha (a) Leonis) provides the ‘punctuation dot’ at the bottom of the backward question mark. The Lion’s body is roughly rectangular, heading east from the Sickle. The star Denebola (Beta (b) Leonis) marks the end of the Lion’s tail, forming a sharp, pointed triangle with the eastern edge of the rectangle. Spindly…
