Raised in 1689 as the Edinburgh Regiment, this association with the Scottish capital, as far as a title was concerned, would continue until 1782 when the then 25th (Edinburgh) Regiment of Foot added ‘Sussex’ instead. Far from popular, the more appropriate ‘King’s Own Borderers’, however, would replace the name of the South of England county in 1805. Regimental numbers were discarded in 1881, the Army List now content with just ‘King’s Own Borderers’, then in 1887 ‘Scottish’ entered the title for the first time.
