WHEN ATTEMPTING TO GET FOOD TO PEOPLE IN NEED THROUGHOUT BIG SKY COUNTRY, THE SHEER SIZE OF THE STATE CAN BE A CHALLENGE. That was the situation in 2014, when the staff at the Montana Food Bank Network wanted to help people experiencing food insecurity in remote rural areas. “These are pioneer towns that had some industry a long time ago, but it’s not there anymore,” explains Eric Luongo, agency resource coordinator at Montana Food Bank Network. “There are a lot of older populations still living there who need assistance.” The Montana Food Bank Network, located in Missoula, regularly sends semis full of food out to network partners across the state’s 147,000 square miles, but adding these remote towns to the routes was just not practical.
