This book contains a collection of photos from the painted streets of Valparaso, Chile. The murals and street art of Valparaso are the equivalent of an outdoor museum, and reflect the city's past, present and hopes for the future. After the end of the Pinochet dictatorship, the city's previously grey walls began to be spontaneously covered with bright, colourful paintings. In 2003 Valparaso was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its unique architecture and street art. These photos include murals painted during the recent mass protests against the government which began in October 2020.
Like the artworks themselves, this compilation does not claim to be 'professional.' It is an impromptu collection made in the spirit of the city itself, with the aim of taking you on a walk through her winding, climbing streets; chaotic yet somehow coordinated; incomplete yet perfect; at once struggling and joyful; and always full of surprises.
