Il tesoro del Santo Sepolcro di Gerusalemme

Stabilitisi in Terra Santa dal XIV secolo per occuparsi dei luoghi santi, i francescani ricevettero numerose donazioni che costituiscono oggi un prezioso tesoro artistico

EVENTO STORICO Le crociate che dal 1096 partirono dall’Europa occidentale verso la Terra Santa avevano lo scopo di conquistare Gerusalemme e assumere il controllo del Santo Sepolcro, in cui la tradizione colloca la sepoltura di Gesù. Dopo il ritiro dei crociati nel 1291 da San Giovanni d’Acri, ultima roccaforte in Palestina, la Chiesa occidentale cercò delle soluzioni per mantenere la propria presenza sul territorio e far sì che potessero proseguire i pellegrinaggi a Gerusalemme. Dopo lunghe trattative, nel 1333 i sovrani di Napoli, Sancia di Maiorca e Roberto d’Angiò, ottennero la restituzione ai cristiani dei luoghi santi: la basilica della Natività di Betlemme e, a Gerusalemme, la tomba della Vergine, il Santo Sepolcro e il Cenacolo.
