Esna, la meraviglia dell’Egitto greco-romano

Un recente restauro ha portato alla luce le splendide decorazioni del tempio di Esna, oggetto di studio fin dagli anni cinquanta

Sulla riva occidentale del Nilo, una sessantina di chilometri a sud di Luxor, si trova una località che gli egizi chiamavano Iunyt e i greci Latopoli, e che oggi corrisponde a Esna, una cittadina di circa 70mila abitanti. Lì, in un’area circondata da edifici moderni e situato nove metri al di sotto del livello stradale, si trova un antico tempio egizio che ha attirato l’interesse di viaggiatori ed egittologi già da prima del XIX secolo. Il santuario fu costruito dai re Tolomeo VI (181145 a.C.) e Tolomeo VIII (145-116a.C.), sovrani della dinastia fondata da Tolomeo Sotere, generale di Alessandro Magno.
