ISABELLA DI CASTIGLIA non beveva mai vino. Secondo l'umanista Marineo Siculo, «era astemia, o detto altrimenti, sobria. Non solo non beveva vino, ma non le piaceva nemmeno». In compenso, sembra che fosse golosa di dolci. Alla fine del XV secolo lo zucchero era una spezia nuova e costosa, non alla portata di tutti. Nel 1490, mentre si trovavano a Siviglia, i re ordinarono pan di Spagna e pan di zucchero, cannella e zenzero. Nel 1477 un pasticcere di Valencia inviò loro pasticcini a base di mandorle e zucchero raffinato, «decorati con gli stemmi di Castiglia e Aragona, ornati con fiori e foglie d'argento». A Isabella piacevano molto anche le marmellate, in particolare quella di mele cotogne.…
