UN GESUITA IN CAPPADOCIA

NEL 1903 IL GESUITA francese Guillaume de Jerphanion fu inviato in Anatolia per insegnare ai bambini armeni in una scuola fondata dal suo ordine. Quando arrivò in Cappadocia rimase affascinato dalle chiese bizantine. Stabilitosi nell'Anatolia settentrionale e poi a Istanbul, per i successivi 25 anni Jerphanion si recò spesso in Cappadocia per catalogare e fotografare la maggior parte delle chiese dipinte della regione. Tra il 1925 e il 1942 pubblicò un'opera in cinque volumi intitolata Une nouvelle province de l'art byzantin.
