NIPOTE DEL CONTE DI SALISBURY, Guglielmo il Maresciallo decise di servire Eleonora di Francia durante la rivolta di Goffredo di Lusignano contro i Plantageneti (1168). Il cavaliere protesse la regina con tale veemenza da venir ferito e catturato. In cambio la monarca decise di pagare il suo riscatto. Da allora divenne maestro di cavalleria e mentore del figlio Enrico il Giovane fino alla morte di questi, nel 1183, poi entrò al servizio di Enrico II e quindi dei nuovi sovrani, Riccardo Cuor di Leone, Giovanni Senza Terra ed Enrico III. Uomo politicamente abile e firmatario della Magna Charta (1215), fu cantato nell'opera anglonormanna Histoire de Guillaume le Maréchal, che la famiglia aveva commissionato per narrarne il lungo percorso di vita.…
