NONOSTANTE LE INFERMITÀ DELLA VECCHIAIA, Carlo Magno continuò ad andare a caccia fino a pochi mesi prima di morire. Nel gennaio dell'814, ad Aquisgrana, fu colpito da una febbre alta che lo costrinse a letto. Morì sette giorni dopo. Secondo Eginardo, fu sepolto nella cappella Palatina «lo stesso giorno in cui morì, e sulla sua tomba fu innalzato un arco dorato con la sua immagine» e un'iscrizione in onore di «Carlo, il grande e ortodosso imperatore».…
