NELLA CATASTROFE del Lusitania persero la vita 128 statunitensi. Questo provocò un'immensa ondata d'indignazione tra i cittadini di un Paese che nel 1915 si manteneva ancora in posizione di neutralità nel conflitto. La guerra sottomarina indiscriminata proseguì, diventando uno dei motivi per cui gli Stati Uniti finirono per dichiarare guerra alla Germania nel 1917. I manifesti che invitavano ad arruolarsi nell'esercito statunitense recitavano «ricordati del Lusitania!» o raffiguravano una donna che affondava con il figlio in braccio, rievocando le vittime civili dell'attacco.
