Costruito tra il 1904 e il 1906, grazie ai suoi 239 metri di lunghezza e alla capacità di ospitare oltre duemila passeggeri e 850 membri dell'equipaggio, il Lusitania era il fiore all'occhiello della compagnia navale Cunard Line. Per un certo periodo fu il più grande transatlantico del mondo, e il suo arredamento ispirò quello del Titanic, varato nel 1911 da una compagnia rivale, la White Star. Entrambe le navi ebbero lo stesso tragico destino, ma per motivi completamente differenti: mentre il Titanic si scontrò con un iceberg in alto mare, il Lusitania fu vittima dell'attacco di un sommergibile tedesco durante la Prima guerra mondiale.
