Per contro, i ghibellini lo riconobbero come il possibile reparator orbis, il “ricostruttore del mondo” che avrebbe punito i prelati indegni e restaurato la purezza della Chiesa. Nacque addirittura una leggenda secondo la quale l’imperatore non sarebbe mai morto ma, sopravvissuto misteriosamente fino alla fine dei tempi, sarebbe stato pronto a tornare sulla terra per guidare i cristiani contro le forze del male.…
