EVENTO STORICO ■ Nella Guerra del Peloponneso il grande storico Tucidide definisce la spedizione ateniese del 415-413 a.C. in Sicilia «la più costosa e magnifica tra quelle partite da una sola città»; ma rappresentò anche il più grande disastro mai subito dall’antica polis. Un errore tattico che avrebbe avuto conseguenze fatali per la democrazia ateniese. Sei anni prima, nel 421 a.C., il generale Nicia aveva negoziato una tregua nella guerra che dal 431 a.C. infuriava tra Sparta e Atene. Molti però erano ansiosi di riprendere le ostilità: tra questi il giovane aristocratico Alcibiade, che secondo Tucidide era solo alla ricerca di denaro e di fama.
