Secondo le teorie dell'epoca a Voltaire furono praticati salassi e purghe emetiche e vennero somministrati fiumi di limonata al fine di evacuare la «materia estranea». Lo scrittore e filosofo illuminista sopravvisse: credette dunque che gli fossero stati applicati i medicamenti corretti, ma si trattò solamente di un caso. Shama racconta la frenetica battaglia dell'umanità per far fronte a vaiolo, colera, peste e agli alti tassi di mortalità per malattia…
