LE SETTE FASI DEL TEMPIO 16-L DI COPÁN

I maya innalzavano le loro piramidi sovrapponendo nuove strutture alle precedenti. È quanto accade nel tempio 16-L, il più alto di Copán. Al di sotto sono presenti costruzioni più antiche, tra le quali l'impressionante tempio Rosalila.

IL TEMPIO ROSALILA Nel 1989 membri del Proyecto Arqueológico Acrópolis Copán scoprirono sotto il tempio 16-L un tempietto precedente praticamente intatto, che chiamarono Rosalila. La struttura, alta 12 m e disposta su tre piani, venne ricoperta con cura per evitarne la distruzione. Gli oggetti rinvenuti all'interno suggeriscono che fu forse il principale santuario della città nel VI secolo. TEMPLI SOVRAPPOSTI Lo schema qui accanto mostra le varie costruzioni che a Copán si succedettero fino all'ultimo “guscio”, il tempio 16-L. La più antica, la sepoltura Hunal 1, risalente all'anno 427, accoglieva la salma del fondatore della dinastia di Copán, Yax K'uk’ Mo’.
