Conosciuta anche con il nome ottomano Kuyunjik, Ninive fu tra le prime città assire a essere riscoperte nel XIX secolo. Dopo le esplorazioni del tedesco Carsten Niebuhr nel 1766 e del console britannico Claudius Rich nel 1820, il sito fu scavato da un compatriota di quest’ultimo, Austen Henry Layard, tra il 1847 e il 1852. Layard era un avvocato che si era appassionato alla storia della Mesopotamia durante un viaggio in Anatolia e Siria all’inizio degli anni quaranta del XIX secolo. Con l’aiuto finanziario dell’ambasciatore britannico a Istanbul, intraprese degli scavi a Nimrud e poi a Ninive, dove portò alla luce i resti di splendidi palazzi e templi costruiti durante l’impero neo-assiro (911-612 a.C.), e in particolare da due re del VII secolo a.C.: Sennacherib e Assurbanipal.
