Le prime immagini che gli europei videro delle terre raggiunte da Colombo furono le incisioni contenute nella sua lettera a Luis de Santángel, pubblicata nell’aprile del 1493 a Barcellona, della quale fu fatta un’edizione a Basilea in cui compare questa immagine. Come racconta il testo, gli indigeni andavano in giro nudi – tranne le donne, che si coprivano con «una foglia o una cosa di cotone» –, armati solo di canne, e fuggivano alla vista degli spagnoli.
