L’ABDICAZIONE DI DIOCLEZIANO

IL GRANDE PALAZZO Residenza di lusso e insieme fortezza, il palazzo di Diocleziano presso Salona era protetto da mura alte 25 m e si affacciava sul mare Adriatico; l’edificio ottagonale è il mausoleo imperiale. NELLA STORIA DELL’IMPERO ROMANO non c’erano precedenti per quello che fu l’ultimo atto politico di Diocleziano, ovvero l’abdicazione, preceduta dalla gloria di un trionfo e seguita dalla prostrazione causata dalla malattia. Diocleziano abdicò dopo una lunga malattia, forse su sollecitazione di Galerio, uno dei cesari Nel novembre del 303 Diocleziano si recò a Roma – forse per la prima volta nella sua vita – al fine di celebrare con Massimiano la vittoria sui persiani sasanidi ottenuta nel 297-298.
