Pitagora sosteneva che «non tutto può essere divulgato a tutti», e aveva proibito di diffondere le conoscenze fuori dalla scuola. Si narrava che un tale Ippaso si azzardò a rivelare certe idee matematiche del maestro: i numeri irrazionali, o che la sfera era composta da dodici pentagoni. Durante un viaggio per mare, Pitagora ordinò che venisse gettato fuori bordo come castigo per tale crimine. Un’altra versione narra che Ippaso morì accidentalmente in un naufragio come punizione degli dei per la sua empietà.
