UNA MATRONA SACRIFICATA Bruto divorziò dalla prima consorte per sposare Porcia, sua cugina, vedova e madre di due figli. Era figlia di Catone Uticense, il principale rivale politico di Cesare. Un celebre aneddoto ricorda che la matrona, che Plutarco descrive come «affettuosa, devota al marito, intelligente e assennata», si rese conto dei crucci che affliggevano il coniuge circa la congiura. Allora si ferì la coscia con un pugnale, sanguinò profusamente e cadde malata. Con il suo coraggio volle dimostrare a Bruto che era degna di condividere le sue preoccupazioni e i suoi segreti. Dopo il cesaricidio Bruto andò in esilio e lei rimase in Italia. La corrispondenza tra Bruto e Cicerone svela che Porcia si ammalò e morì nel 43 a.C.
