È RARO TROVARE UN MONASTERO MEDIEVALE che non abbia subito modifiche nel corso del tempo. L’arrivo dell’Età moderna determinò il declino della maggior parte dei monasteri, che dovettero adattarsi ai nuovi tempi con una maggiore apertura al mondo esterno, accettando l’ingresso dei fedeli nelle proprie chiese. Si rese pertanto necessario proteggere l’isolamento dei monaci in modo diverso: di qui, le gallerie e le stanze superiori dei chiostri (alle quali si accedeva mediante nuove scale monumentali), i cori situati in alto o le celle singole. E anche le biblioteche, che cercavano di migliorare l’istruzione dei membri della comunità.…
