KIRK AND SPOCK IN THE CASTING COUCH

Jack Lord and Martin Landau are just two names of many considered for parts in Star Trek: The Original Series. Among the actors considered for the part of ‘Captain Pike’ were, apart from Jeffrey Hunter who secured the role, Liam Sullivan, Leslie Nielson, Guy Stockwell, William Shatner and, at Majel Barrett's suggestion, James Coburn. When Captain Pike was replaced by Captain Kirk for the second pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before, Roddenberry unable to agree terms with Lord, Shatner accepted the offered role, riding high on a recognition factor with studio bosses after guest star appearances in such shows as Playhouse 90 and The Twilight Zone.
