On 2 December 1979, the Los Angeles Times Syndicate launched a series of adventures for the newly refitted starship U.S.S. Enterprise, with a daily and Sunday comic strip based on Star Trek: The Motion Picture that lasted four years and a day. Though overshadowed in some markets by long-running sci-fi strips Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, and by the latest phenomenon at that time, Star Wars, the L.A. Times' Star Trek strip broke new ground, by bringing James T. Kirk's crew into fans' homes seven days a week.
