Crossovers occupy an odd corner of the comic-book genre. Properties owned by one company are matched up with those of another, or with other properties owned by the same company, enabling characters to meet who would unlikely otherwise interact. Imagine James Bond smuggling spice with Chewbacca, or Rick Grimes battling Thanos, or Winnie the Pooh solving crimes and eating honey with Sherlock Holmes. Now imagine how difficult it would be to make such stories readable. In the late 1970s and early '80s, DC Comics and Marvel Comics co-published team-ups between Superman and Spider-Man, Batman and the Hulk, and Superman and He-Man.
