THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF Reginald Barclay

From his humble origins as a diagnostic engineer to the essential role he played in communicating with the Delta Quadrant, Reginald Barclay demonstrated that first impressions don't always indicate someone's true potential. Throughout his Starfleet career, Barclay showcased resilience as he endured struggles with debilitating anxiety, an assortment of phobias, and an unsettling holodeck addiction. Despite these difficulties, the lieutenant braved his fears, proved himself to be a clever engineer, and established friendships with his shipmates. These factors, as well as his willingness to seek help in his sessions with Counselor Deanna Troi, paint the picture of a person who was just as heroic as any other officer in the fleet.

An Enterprising Assignment While Reginald Barclays record indicated he had served Starfleet well for years, earned satisfactory ratings while posted to the U.S.S. Zhukov, and received praise from Captain Gleason prior to transferring to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701-D in 2366, his initial performance aboard the Federation flagship left much to be desired for Commander William T. Riker, Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Tardiness and a lack of effort defined Lieutenant Barclays early days on the ship, and Riker even hypothesized that Gleason may have spoken highly about the engineer to facilitate his departure. Citing references to seclusive tendencies in Barclays Starfleet Academy psychological profile, Riker doubted Barclays abilities.
