Denise Crosby talks about playing Lieutenant Tasha Yar, Sela, and Doctor Jenna Yar (Who?)

When she auditioned for Star Trek: The Next Generation, Denise Crosby initially read for the role of Counselor Deanna Troi, whereas Marina Sirtis read for the role of Macha Hernandez. However, the late The Next Generation creator Gene Roddenberry switched the two, feeling Sirtis was better suited for the role of Troi. In turn, Crosby got the part of Lieutenant Natasha “Tasha” Yar, the character which, Macha Hernandez, inspired by Jenette Goldstein's character Private Vasquez in the 1986 blockbuster Aliens, eventually evolved into.
