Captain Hikaru Sulu settled into his new quarters aboard the U.S.S. Excelsior on the eve of the ship's first three-year mission. The generous accommodations were definitely a step up from his old digs aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise and Enterprise-A. “Housewarming” gifts from friends, family, and well-wishers had already been delivered to the premises, among them a set of traditional Japanese warosoku candles from his daughter Demora, whose photo was proudly displayed at his personal work station; an antique sextant from Captain Kirk; a swagger stick from the Excelsior's previous captain, Lawrence Styles; and, most intriguingly, an exotic potted planet whose species Sulu could not immediately identify despite his keen interest in botany. Leafy cerise fronds, close to a meter in height, prompted nostalgic memories of “Gertrude,” his pet carnivorous plant…
