IN RETROSPECT: THE ART OF KAVITA MAHARAJ

As the owner of Retrospect Studios, fine artist Kavita Maharaj has channeled her creative talents into stunning paintings that feature a host of characters and starships from throughout the Star Trek universe, ranging from Spock and Nyota to the U.S.S. Enterprise and a Klingon Bird-of-Prey. Maharaj graciously spoke to Star Trek Explorer about her artistic journey, the inspiration behind her creative endeavors, her connection to her work, the relationship between art and philosophy, and much more.

Star Trek Explorer: Every artist's path is unique. At what point in your life did you know you wanted to pursue a career in fine art? What were your first steps to achieving this goal? Kavita Maharaj: When I was eight years old, a teacher of mine saw me sketching my own hand during a lull in my classwork. She stopped, asked me if I had really drawn that, then proceeded to show the sketch to the rest of the classroom. She then put it back down on my desk and said, “I want your first painting.” It was the first time I think I'd become aware that someone thought I might actually create professionally in the future, and that idea took root.
