As schools scramble to unite and form superconferences, things like “meaningful names” and “common sense” have gone out the window. How else can we explain why the Cal Bears, whose football stadium lies less than 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean, are now a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference? Or how the Big Ten could add four teams, bringing its total to 18? Conference realignment will be the biggest story this season. Cal will be joined by Stanford and SMU in the ACC.
