THE HEISMAN TROPHYis awarded to the best player in college football. During his career at Iowa State, Brock Purdy didn’t receive a single vote. He is, however, the proud owner of the Lowsman Trophy. That’s given to the player who is selected with the last pick in the NFL draft, along with the title of Mr. Irrelevant. The idea for Mr. Irrelevant dates back to the mid-1970s. Paul Salata had a less-than-memorable NFL career as a wide receiver a quarter-century earlier. But he did have a great sense of humor. While working in the sewer business in California, Salata thought it would be fun to honor players like him, guys who didn’t get a lot of attention.
